How to protect fens effectively?
Does “the golden mean” exist?

We are still looking for an answer to these questions, and subsequent studies as well as broadening our knowledge on fens bring us closer to reaching this goal.

We can seek answers in “Habitat 7230 management plan in Poland” where methods of alkaline fens protection were described. The authors of the study emphasize in particular the importance of individual and detailed identification of fens prior to taking conservation measures.

Methods of conservation include the following actions:

• improvement of water conditions
• curbing of tree and bush succession
• restoration and modification of forms of use
• good and effective setting objectives of protection for a habitat in key planning works and documents

All these actions will be carried out in the commenced project “Conservation and restoration of alkaline fens (code 7230) in the young-glacial landscape of the northern Poland”.
